Lives Changed by LEAP

These stories represent thousands of Ghanaians whose lives have been meaningfully improved through the LEAP programme.

Aneba Awumtumyiga

From Despair to Dressmaking

"LEAP gave me a chance to prove that disability is not inability. Today I have skills and I can provide for my family."

Aneba Awumtumyiga lives with a severe physical disability that once left her entirely dependent on the goodwill of neighbours and relatives. With no income and limited mobility, providing for herself and her dependants felt impossible.

After being enrolled as a LEAP beneficiary, Aneba used her bi-monthly cash grants strategically — enrolling as an apprentice at a local dressmaking shop. The training gave her both technical skills and financial independence. Today, Aneba operates her own small dressmaking business and contributes to her household's income.

Her story demonstrates that even severely disabled individuals, given adequate financial support and opportunity, can build pathways to self-sufficiency.

Zinabu Sumaila

From Cash Grant to Pig Farm

"I used every pesewa wisely. Now my family has food every day and I can send my children to school without worry."

Zinabu Sumaila from Ninkogo in the Pusiga District was among the first LEAP beneficiaries in her community. A single mother caring for several children, Zinabu struggled to meet her household's basic nutritional needs, let alone think about the future.

Rather than spending her LEAP grants on immediate consumption alone, Zinabu made a bold investment: she purchased two young pigs. Over the following months, with careful management, her small herd grew. She now runs a thriving pig farm that provides both food for her family and income from sales.

Zinabu's farm has become a source of inspiration in her community, showing other beneficiaries how strategic use of cash transfers can create sustainable livelihoods.

Awenemi Apogyanga

Building a Business, Building a Future

"Before LEAP I had nothing. Now I have a business, my children are in school, and I have hope for tomorrow."

Awenemi Apogyanga was enrolled in the LEAP programme as a member of an extremely poor household. Like many beneficiaries, her immediate priority was feeding her family. But Awenemi had bigger dreams.

Combining her LEAP grants with savings and a small community loan, Awenemi invested in raw materials to produce and sell local goods. Her product line — tailored to local demand — found a ready market among neighbours, community members, and traders.

Today, Awenemi's small business generates consistent income that supplements her LEAP grants. Her children are enrolled in school, her family's food security has improved dramatically, and she has become an advocate for the LEAP programme in her community.

The Bigger Picture

Beyond individual stories, LEAP is creating measurable change across communities and the nation.

🏫

🌾

💪

Economic Resilience

63% invested in economic activities — from small trading to livestock to handicrafts — creating sustainable income beyond the cash grant itself.
